Week of Feb 6th

A Message from the Administrative Team:

"If we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity."
                                                                                                                                   ~ John F Kennedy

We hope everyone enjoyed this cold weekend! Please make sure your child has their hats, mitts and boots to stay warm during recess.  Just a reminder that if students are sick, they should stay home.  Students at school are expected to be outside for recess.

We would like to remind students to pick up their hot lunches before they attend their lunch time programs. Lunches left are brought to the office.

We have lots of forms, documents and monies being collected.  Please ask your child to submit all permission forms as soon as possible.

On Monday, we have about 14 delegates visiting from Saudia Arabia to observe the Canadian education system.  Feel free to say hello to our visitors if you cross paths in the school.

Have a wondrous week!

~ Ms Broderick and Ms Rosenbloom

Yearbook Committee

Thank you to everyone who sent in photos for our Winter Photography contest. We received some amazing entries from some really great photographers at Bessborough!

The Bessborough Yearbook Committee is also looking for photos from both Holiday Concerts. If anyone has any to they would like to share with us, please send them in as we don’t have many for this year's yearbook.

We’re always looking for photos, so send any you want to share from any other recent school event too.

Please send your best quality photos to bessboroughyearbook@gmail.com. Be sure to send the largest file size you have (best resolution) or if sending from your iPhone, please send “Actual Size”. For any questions, please email Sue Thurow at susan.thurow@tdsb.on.ca or Corey Ferguson at c.ginou@sympatico.ca

From the Athletic Council:

This week, intramurals will be on Thursday and Friday. Both grades five and six are welcome. Thursday will be a competitive intramural, and Friday will be non competitive. You are welcome to come on one day, or both.

This Monday, Movement Matters will be taking place again, in the gym at 8:20am. We are inviting all grades 1-6 to join us, and participate in some fun activities, and get some exercise to start the day off right. We hope to see you there!

Join Folkfest!

Folkfest is back at Bessborough starting this Feb. 7th.

Folkfest is a club for students in Grades 3 – 6. Each week, students will learn a new folk dance.

On May 16 (rain date May 18), there is a Folkfest event at East York Collegiate for Folkfest clubs all over the TDSB.  Hundreds of students come to the event and perform the dances they have learned together.

Folkfest will take place on Tuesdays after lunch is eaten. Children will be escorted to the big gym at 12:05.

If you are interested, please fill out this form and return it to your teacher by Monday, February 6.  We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Ms. Cook and Ms. Willoughby

H&S Vote February 8th - Georgia Walsh Memorial Wall Donation from Home & School
A request has been brought forward by six Home & School member families to purchase a medium balloon on the Georgia Walsh Memorial wall in support of the Trace Manes Playground Rejuvenation project.  More about the wall and project here:  http://rememberinggeorgiawalsh.com/

The requested amount is $1000, with the money coming from savings resulting from not having to purchase rugs as allocated for the grade four portables.   These classrooms received donated rugs.  The balloon would recognize the donation from the Bessborough Home & School Association.

The Executive has reviewed and endorses this expenditure.  The park is a very important part of our community.  Primary classes use it for field trips, many if not all of us have taken our kids there to play year round and enjoy the splash pad on hot summer days.  The Georgia Walsh initiative continues to offer a constant reminder to our children of staying safe in our neighbourhoods.

There are three ways for Home & School members to vote:

1.  In person at the February 8th Math Night
2.  Via ballot, outside the office, Monday Feb 6th through Wednesday February 8th
3.  Via link.  Note that using the link your vote will not be anonymous:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd2Kh-InznMDNZdhBuTGkwLRyh1YwI-dpAkC3JDBa-MW1LlVQ/viewform?c=0&w=1

Reminder!  Parent-only Math Night - February 8th
There will be a brief Home & School update to kick-off the meeting.

Appreciation Corner

A shout out to Carolyn Duckworth, Jen Comish and Ms. Angheloni who support our Student Engagement Committee.  They offer their time and expertise to mentor and encourage kids in their activities to support each other and the school.  They also liaise with our parent community via H&S.  It’s an invaluable part of enriching our children’s time at school. THANK YOU!
