Week of May 29th

A Message from the Administrative Team:

"Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together."
                                                                                                       ~ Paul Ryan

What a great day for Mayfair!  Mother Nature was definitely on Bessborough's side.  It's a great time to bring the whole community together.

Grade 3-6 students will be participating in EQAO this week.  Students will be writing in the morning and the afternoon will be with their homeroom teachers for some activity time. Please schedule any appointments you have after lunch.

As we enter our last month of school please help us maintain our school routines.  Students who are late need to report to the office before going to class.  All visitors must report to the office.  Students who are being signed out will meet their parents in the office to avoid visitors roaming the hallways and disruptions to instructional time. Late lunches can be dropped off at the table near the office.  Please let Christina know

Don't forget to search the hallways and entrances for any lost & found items.  You might want them for the summer!

Have an amazing week!
~ Ms Broderick and Ms Rosenbloom

Did you know...

... this weekend marks the start of Ramadan (month of fasting).

Some of our students at Bessborough will be fasting from about 3:45 am - 9:00 pm (no food and water during this time) for the next 30 days. Teachers will be keeping a close eye on these students especially on those hot/muggy days.

Mr Baker will have his room open at lunch (starting this Wednesday) for any students fasting that would like to stay away from the sun and the lunchroom.

Thank you Mr Baker!

Thank you Home & School!

We would like to send a big thank you to all the parents who provided treats for staff last week during Staff Appreciation week.  With all the activities happening recently, these treats were a great pick me up for all staff.  Thank you!

Bike Donation:

Thank you to those who dropped off bikes at Mayfair!

Bikes will be donated to help
support the Thorncliffe community.

If you didn't get a chance to drop
off your gently used bike, you can still
drop them off Monday.

For more information about the Bike Drive,
contact Andrew at
andrew@informationpackaging.ca.

TIME:  8:10 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. (20 minutes)

COST:  It is free! Thanks to Home and School funding

Why Participate?   To promote fitness, well-being and to have fun!

FINAL NOTES:
*IF it is raining there will be NO Kilometer Club that day
*REMEMBER to eat a healthy breakfast before KC and bring a healthy snack /water for       afterwards!

If you haven’t ordered your yearbook yet, you have one more chance!
Order your Yearbook to commemorate the 2016-17 school year at Bessborough with the attached order form.
Just drop it off with a cheque to the office, or to your child’s teacher by June 6th. Yearbooks must be pre-ordered from the printer, so don’t miss out!!

Mayfair – Long Range Forecast: Sunshine!
Everyone is counting down until the big day - THIS Sunday May 28th.
Thank you to everyone who sent in their Mayfair form by Friday’s deadline.  Wristbands will be sent home Wednesday, May 24th and we will announce the Pizza Party winning class this week.  For those busy parents who were unable to make the deadline…have no fear, we will still honour the early bird up price until Thursday so we can send the last of the wristbands home on Friday.

    Poster Contest
We are excited to announce that Lauren Alberstat in Grade 6 is the winner of this year’s poster contest and a free wristband. Please see attached the final poster with her drawing. Truly amazing!

    Guessing Jars
We are still looking for guessing jar donations. We are looking for all shapes and sizes of jars and feel free to be creative in what you fill your jar with! If you are interested, please email Jennifer O’Donnell @ jodonnell@curacomm.net.
Just a reminder to drop your donation off at the office by Thursday, May 25th. Please attach a removable label on the bottom of the jar that indicates your name and the number of candies/items in the jar.

    URGENT - Volunteers Still Required
Have you had an opportunity to look at the sign-up sheet for Mayfair volunteers? Notice the empty spaces? Notice your friends are missing? Why not send a friendly reminder to them?
Mayfair cannot run without our parent community involved. Please take 30 seconds to sign up and contribute to our students’ favourite event of the year!

Together let’s make this year’s Mayfair the best one yet!

    Stuffie Donations
Once again our Teddy Bear Hospital will be running at Mayfair. Any family wanting to clear out some gently used stuffies is welcome to drop them off in the box outside the office this week.

Silent Auction Donation – Per Class
The Mayfair silent auction has traditionally raised close to $5,000 each year. Similar to last year we wanted to give each class an opportunity to support Mayfair by securing one silent auction donation.
Let’s leverage our work relationships/connections, our entrepreneurial friends and family who would love to market to our parent community or any business.  All we have to do is ask!

    Social Series Update
The Fingernail Painting party has been cancelled and the Origami event will be held on Monday, May 29th, not the 30th as stated in the catalogue sent out last week.
Remember all the money you spend on having fun at these events goes back to the school!  The catalogue of events - and Wish List order form - is also attached to this email.
Hand in your Wish List at the Social Series Desk at Mayfair which will be located just inside the gate in the South Yard on the Bessborough Dr. side.  It will be open from 10:30am-12:30pm.  First come first served! Don't miss out!

    Enrichment Updates
Next week is Appreciation week, a chance for us to express our appreciation to our wonderful staff.  They can look forward to some treats and fun as we head into the very busy home stretch.  Students always enjoy the basket draw - every morning staff names are announced until one winner remains on Friday!

Thank you Suzy Sharples and Elvira Chew for organizing this on behalf of H&S!

An update for you on the kindie sandbox which is already a huge hit!  After researching the options available to us in terms of a lid for that size and dimension of sandbox, we have concluded that a lid is not ideal.  The only option was to install a soft cover lid and there was no ability to lock it during off-school hours.  We were concerned that with neighbourhood use the lid would get torn and would not be properly covered each night.

    It’s been a Slice!
Hard to believe, but this Thursday May 25th will be the last Pizza Lunch for this school year.
Thanks again to Lisa Jones and the entire Pizza Lunch Committee for an amazing job organizing this initiative.

Get your runners ready…. Kilometer Club is back!
Start your day off with some fitness and fun!  Kilometer Club starts on Monday May 29th and runs for 9 days until Thursday June 8th.  Meet in the south yard - the run goes from 8:10-8:30am.  We need about 5 volunteers to help pass out popsicle sticks, bracelets and charms.  Please meet organizer Triina Forbell on the first morning.  See the attached doc for all the info!

    Appreciation Corner
A HUGE shout out to those who organized and ran Wellness Day - under the direction of Ms. Angheloni - Mr. Baker, Mr. Day, Mr. McMillan, Ms. Azodi, Ms. Backus, Mr. Pantopoulos and Ms. Buksner, along with all the teachers who ran stations and volunteers Jen Comish, Lisa Suutari and Robyn Israel.  It was an awesome day of fun and learning!  THANK YOU for making it happen!

Visit www.bessboroughhomeandschool.com now for details on all of this and more!
