Week of May 23rd

A Message from the Administrative Team:

"The worst thing about making a mistake is being afraid to make one."                                                                                                                                                         ~ Unknown

It was a great week which started with DrumFIT, an interactive movement activity incorporating drumming and fitness.  Students has an amazing experience with this throughout the day! Check out our Twitter feed to see some video and pics of the day.

Grade 3-6 students will be participating in EQAO over the next two weeks.  Students will be writing in the morning and the afternoon will be with their homeroom teachers for some activity time.  Please schedule any appointments you have after lunch.

On Thursday May 25th we will be having some delegates from Texas visit our classrooms to see how we incorporate technology into our programs, use inquiry based lessons and other great learning that take place at Bessborough.  Be sure to say hi as they come by your class!

Pizza day is also on Thursday!

Have a tremendous week!
~ Ms Broderick and Ms Rosenbloom

Did you know...

...Mayfair is a great way for the community to meet, staff to meet families and fundraise to help enhance programming at Bessborough as well as to help and support other communities.  It has been a tradition for over 25 years with lots of fun activities to participate in!

Invite friends and family to this awesome event! If you have any questions, please contact Jenn at
or Kristine at

Thank you Home & School for running
such an amazing event!

Don't forget to bring your old bikes
for the Bike Drive as well!

Bikes will be donated to help
support the Thorncliffe community.

You can drop them off in the south yard.
For more information about the Bike Drive,
contact Andrew at

Congratulations Lauren Alberstat in Grade 6 who is the winner of this year’s poster contest and a free wristband!

Kilometer Club:

It’s Back... KILOMETER CLUB 2017!
This is a non-competitive activity for ALL Bessborough students to participate in!

WHEN:  Every morning for 9 days starting Monday May 29th to THURSDAY June 8th  2017

TIME:  8:10 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. (20 minutes)

WHERE: Bessborough South Yard

What to do?    Run or walk around the south schoolyard field and collect one popsicle stick for each lap they complete. Goal is to run/walk as many laps as possible & collect one charm for your bracelet after you are finished running. A bracelet will be provided on the first day of Kilometer Club for all runners.

ATTENDANCE:  Participate as many mornings as you can to collect ONE charm per day!  After the run, check in at the attendance table with your teacher’s  name and how many popsicle sticks you collected that day; at the end of the two weeks we will total all the popsicle sticks collected by all runners to see how far Bessborough students have run across Canada (each stick will equal  approx. 200m).  Students can run as many laps as they would like during the 20 minutes, in fact, it’s encouraged!   The class with the most KM’s run at the end of Kilometer Club will be awarded a prize.

COST:  It is free! Thanks to Home and School funding

Why Participate?   To promote fitness, well-being and to have fun!
***PLEASE NOTE that Kilometer Club is a volunteer parent based club with as a staff sponsor. Therefore parents/guardians of the child(ren) must stay or make arrangements with another parent to supervise.  We will need lots of parents to hand out popsicle sticks to the runners

Bessborough Child Care Centre Students:  please ensure you drop off your children by 8AM to allow one of the BCCC staff to bring them out to the yard to participate.

*IF it is raining there will be NO Kilometer Club that day
*REMEMBER to eat a healthy breakfast before KC and bring a healthy snack /water for       afterwards!
**Look for the Map of Canada posted in the main hallway to check on our school’s progress as we run across Canada for 8 days!

*** A prize will be awarded to the class that has the most participants over the 9 days!

Mayfair – Long Range Forecast: Sunshine!
Everyone is counting down until the big day - THIS Sunday May 28th.
Thank you to everyone who sent in their Mayfair form by Friday’s deadline.  Wristbands will be sent home Wednesday, May 24th and we will announce the Pizza Party winning class this week.  For those busy parents who were unable to make the deadline…have no fear, we will still honour the early bird up price until Thursday so we can send the last of the wristbands home on Friday.

Poster Contest
We are excited to announce that Lauren Alberstat in Grade 6 is the winner of this year’s poster contest and a free wristband. Please see attached the final poster with her drawing. Truly amazing!

Guessing Jars
We are still looking for guessing jar donations. We are looking for all shapes and sizes of jars and feel free to be creative in what you fill your jar with! If you are interested, please email Jennifer O’Donnell @
Just a reminder to drop your donation off at the office by Thursday, May 25th. Please attach a removable label on the bottom of the jar that indicates your name and the number of candies/items in the jar.

URGENT - Volunteers Still Required
Have you had an opportunity to look at the sign-up sheet for Mayfair volunteers? Notice the empty spaces? Notice your friends are missing? Why not send a friendly reminder to them?
Mayfair cannot run without our parent community involved. Please take 30 seconds to sign up and contribute to our students’ favourite event of the year!

Together let’s make this year’s Mayfair the best one yet!

Stuffie Donations
Once again our Teddy Bear Hospital will be running at Mayfair. Any family wanting to clear out some gently used stuffies is welcome to drop them off in the box outside the office this week.

Silent Auction Donation – Per Class
The Mayfair silent auction has traditionally raised close to $5,000 each year. Similar to last year we wanted to give each class an opportunity to support Mayfair by securing one silent auction donation.
Let’s leverage our work relationships/connections, our entrepreneurial friends and family who would love to market to our parent community or any business.  All we have to do is ask!

Social Series Update
The Fingernail Painting party has been cancelled and the Origami event will be held on Monday, May 29th, not the 30th as stated in the catalogue sent out last week.
Remember all the money you spend on having fun at these events goes back to the school!  The catalogue of events - and Wish List order form - is also attached to this email.
Hand in your Wish List at the Social Series Desk at Mayfair which will be located just inside the gate in the South Yard on the Bessborough Dr. side.  It will be open from 10:30am-12:30pm.  First come first served! Don't miss out!

Enrichment Updates
Next week is Appreciation week, a chance for us to express our appreciation to our wonderful staff.  They can look forward to some treats and fun as we head into the very busy home stretch.  Students always enjoy the basket draw - every morning staff names are announced until one winner remains on Friday!

Thank you Suzy Sharples and Elvira Chew for organizing this on behalf of H&S!

An update for you on the kindie sandbox which is already a huge hit!  After researching the options available to us in terms of a lid for that size and dimension of sandbox, we have concluded that a lid is not ideal.  The only option was to install a soft cover lid and there was no ability to lock it during off-school hours.  We were concerned that with neighbourhood use the lid would get torn and would not be properly covered each night.

It’s been a Slice!
Hard to believe, but this Thursday May 25th will be the last Pizza Lunch for this school year.
Thanks again to Lisa Jones and the entire Pizza Lunch Committee for an amazing job organizing this initiative.

Get your runners ready…. Kilometer Club is back!
Start your day off with some fitness and fun!  Kilometer Club starts on Monday May 29th and runs for 9 days until Thursday June 8th.  Meet in the south yard - the run goes from 8:10-8:30am.  We need about 5 volunteers to help pass out popsicle sticks, bracelets and charms.  Please meet organizer Triina Forbell on the first morning.  See the attached doc for all the info!

Appreciation Corner
A HUGE shout out to those who organized and ran Wellness Day - under the direction of Ms. Angheloni - Mr. Baker, Mr. Day, Mr. McMillan, Ms. Azodi, Ms. Backus, Mr. Pantopoulos and Ms. Buksner, along with all the teachers who ran stations and volunteers Jen Comish, Lisa Suutari and Robyn Israel.  It was an awesome day of fun and learning!  THANK YOU for making it happen!

Visit now for details on all of this and more!

Community Coffee
These meetings are held in the mornings in a local restaurant (often Longo's on Laird). They are attended by the Supervisory Officers for our area, parents and community members.  There may be a report from the Board but there is no Agenda and attendees raise issues they would like to discuss.
