Week of April 10th

A Message from the Administrative Team:

"My biggest competition is myself. I am not looking to follow others or pull them down. I'm planning to test my own boundaries."                                                                                                                                                         ~ Rain

We hope you had a great weekend with nice weather finally on the way!  There are several lunch bags, boots, jackets, gloves, hats and other clothing that are lingering in our various Lost & Found bins in the school.  Please check the following locations for Lost & Found items:  South Yard doorways, North Yard doorway, Bin outside the Clay room (Daycare) & Front Hallway.

The International Day of Pink is a Canadian anti-bullying event held annually on the second Wednesday of April. The event started when students David Shepherd and Travis Price saw another student, who was wearing a pink shirt, being bullied in their Central Kings Rural High School in Nova Scotia, and deciding to show support for the student by getting everyone at their school to wear pink the following day. This is a great opportunity to talk about what it means to be a bystander and to importance on how to support those in need. Grade 1-8 students will participate in an assembly around these issues on Wednesday.

Have a wonderous week!
~ Ms Broderick and Ms Rosenbloom

Kindie Yard Construction

We are excited about the renovations that will take place in the Kindergarten yard.  Construction will begin this week and will take place with little disruption to the Kindies playtime.  Entrance for
Kindergartens will continue to be in the front unless otherwise notified.

Act of "We Are Silent" - April 13th

On April 13, Bessborough students will choose to be SILENT.

“Their Voices Matter. Our Voice Matters”
“Issues like child labor, child soldiers, and access to water and education, drown out the voices of youth across the world. Everyone deserves the chance to live the life they choose—not one chosen for them by poverty, illiteracy and happenstance.( www.we.org/we-are-silent/).
Our students will choose to be silent for 1 hour (some for the entire day) and their silence will bring awareness about those children whose voices are never heard or purposefully silenced.
The primary grades will be silent for the 57 million children who are deprived of an education and are not in school. The junior and intermediate students will make their own choices.

Pink Day Assembly: Wednesday April 12th

Dear Parents/Guardians of Bessborough,

The Boys Club would like to inform you that we will be having a Pink Day Assembly on Wednesday April the 12th. Students are encouraged to wear pink on this day to raise awareness for everyone who has been bullied.

We hope that we can make this school a better place. We would like to kindly ask if you could tell your child to buy a bracelet will only be $1. They glow in the dark and say #pinkday 017. In addition it says "It Only Takes ONE" which is our slogan since it only takes 1 bystander to stop bullying and to make this world a better place.

Sincerely, The Boys Club

Grade 8 Grad Trip - Medical Insurance

Just a reminder to Grade 8 students who will be going on the Grad Trip to bring their proof of medical travel insurance to their homeroom teacher if you haven't already sent it.  This is a requirement by the board for all out of country trips.

Lice Check - Monday April 10th

Just a reminder that we have Lice checks at school on Monday.  If you discover your child has lice, you can email Caroline or Raine at the office.  We will send a generic email to your child's class indicating that lice was present in the classroom, without disclosing any names for privacy reasons.

Yearbook Cover Contest Has Just Begun!

The yearbook committee is calling all students to enter this year’s Yearbook Cover Contest. Students can get full details of the contest in the office or from the posters hung around the school. Entries should be dropped off in the office by Friday, May 12

Keep sending in those photos too! Any photos you’d like to share with us, please send to bessboroughyearbook@gmail.com

Be sure to send best quality and the largest file size you have (highest resolution) or if sending from your iPhone, please send “Actual Size”. For any questions, please email Sue Thurow at susan.thurow@tdsb.on.ca or Corey Ferguson at c.ginou@sympatico.ca.

STEM Day at Bessborough:

STEM Day is coming up on Friday, April 21st

Kindergarten students will participate in their activities throughout the morning with parent volunteers helping to run activities. Primary, Junior and Intermediate divisions will be engaging in their STEM activities throughout the afternoon. Parents of PRIMARY and JUNIOR students are welcome to drop in at some point in the afternoon to see all of the engaging activities Bessborough is participating in.

Please note that students in the Primary and Junior divisions will be grouped with other students in their own grade as well as older and younger students. Parents dropping in can tour the Primary activities happening in the Grade 1-3 classrooms. Parents of Junior students can view activities in the Grade 4-6 classrooms, including portables.

We are looking forward to a day of creation, innovation and fun!

Ms. Buksner

Call Out for STEM Materials:

For our upcoming STEM day, the Junior STEM committee is looking to collect empty egg cartons (any material) and empty eggshells for some of their activities. The shells should be in two halves and rinsed out before bringing them to school. Please send in any of these items to your child's teacher as soon as possible.

Thanks!
Ms. Buksner

Wellness:

This week the Wellness Group worked on preparing our very own Bessborough Wall of High Fives bulletin board (just outside the main office).

Each class has been given a container of paper hands with their teacher's name on it. Anyone can record an act of kindness that has been witnessed and include the person's name on one of the handprints. Starting next week, we hope to build a bulletin board full of high-fives!

Athletic Council

The grade 7-8 badminton intramurals have been cancelled. The Athletic Council will be planning grade 3-4 intramurals starting the week of the 17th.

This Monday, Movement Matters will be taking place again, in the gym at 8:20am. We are inviting all grades 1-6 to join us, and participate in some fun activities, and get some exercise to start the day off right. We hope to see you there!

H&S Meeting - Vote Results
Thanks to all who attended our General Meeting this week.  There was very strong support voting for the proposed community outreach initiative.  Are you interested in being involved?  We welcome your participation as we come together to give Bessborough the opportunity to support schools without the same resources.  Contact lisa.suutari@gmail.com.

As well - our fall arts initiative, which culminates in our wonderful holiday concert, was also approved for funding via next fall's fundraising activities.  This means we can commit to the team that plans and choreographs the program and works with our kids for several weeks of fun performance art.

The Kindie Yard Project Begins!
Our biggest enrichment project this year, enhancing the well-loved kindie yard, is set to begin next week.   We understand access to the school will not be affected.  What will the kids like more?  Watching the construction, or playing in their great new yard once it’s complete?

Appreciation Corner
THANK YOU to Lori Heller for offering to host the always popular Ladies Night Social.  We couldn’t run these events without parent support.  Thank you Lori!
