Week of April 18th

A Message from the Administrative Team:

"As we grow up, we realize it becomes less important to have a ton of friends, and more important to have the real ones."                                                                                                                                                         ~ Unknown

Happy Easter and Happy Passover to those families who celebrate. We hope you enjoyed this long weekend with family and friends!

We are very impressed at how the various school clubs have come together to learn and support important issues that impact students globally.  It shows us how students are thinking beyond their own needs to help others.  We would like to thank our staff who run the various clubs and provide such enriching opportunities for our Bessborough students. Thank you!  We look forward to seeing other initiatives our student leaders will take on.

Just a reminder that Grade 3 - 8 students will be attending the baseball game this Thursday. Go Jays Go!

With the warmer weather approaching, students are running around and enjoying the nice weather outside during lunch and recess.  Just a reminder to primary parents to leave an extra pair of clothing for those muddy or accident days to prevent a trip to the school.

Have a tremendous week!
~ Ms Broderick and Ms Rosenbloom

Did you know...

...our National Pink Day assembly was a huge success!  It was so great to see our students work together to lead such an important assembly. Ms Broderick in her pink wig and tutu concluded the assembly to show her support.

The Boys Club would like to thank all the parents/students at Bessborough for showing your support on Pink Day and purchasing our bracelets with our #PinkDay2017 slogan "It Only Takes ONE". We doubled our goal for this year and raised over $400 on Pink Day! Part of the funds raised will be used to offset the price of the bracelets while the remaining funds will be used for anti-bullying initiatives at our school. This includes a Guest Speaker and future fundraising drives similar to our Covenant House drive from this past year.

... Grade 8 students have been working on creating videos for a contest to support Mental Health week.  Some of these were shown at the Pink Day assembly.  These will also be submitted for a contest through the Children's Mental Health conference.  Congratulations to all! Take a look!  Thank you Ms Wong for sending these in.

Kindie Yard Construction

The Kindies have been enthralled watching the construction of their new playground area.  The sod will be added within the next week and then ready for the kids to play.  Stay tuned!

Kindergarten Parent Information Night - Thurs April 20th @6:30 pm - Library

There is a session for new Kindergarten parents this Thursday. Come and see what the Kindergarten program entails at Bessborough. To help cover as many topics possible, feel free to add your questions to this survey prior to the session.

Save the date!
Kindergarten Orientation visits will occur on June 7th and 8th from 8:45 am – 9:30 am.  A link to a sign up sheet will be sent in May.

Grade 2's Coding!

Ms Surdivall, Ms Thurow and Ms Ho have been working with the Grade 2 students to program in Scratch.  They got creative to make "carnival rides" using WeDos. These little coders were really amazing!  Check out our Twitter to see video of what they are doing.

Yearbook Cover Contest Has Just Begun!

The yearbook committee is calling all students to enter this year’s Yearbook Cover Contest. Students can get full details of the contest in the office or from the posters hung around the school. Entries should be dropped off in the office by Friday, May 12

Keep sending in those photos too! Any photos you’d like to share with us, please send to bessboroughyearbook@gmail.com

Be sure to send best quality and the largest file size you have (highest resolution) or if sending from your iPhone, please send “Actual Size”. For any questions, please email Sue Thurow at susan.thurow@tdsb.on.ca or Corey Ferguson at c.ginou@sympatico.ca.

STEM Day at Bessborough:

STEM Day is coming up on Friday, April 21st

Kindergarten students will participate in their activities throughout the morning with parent volunteers helping to run activities. Primary, Junior and Intermediate divisions will be engaging in their STEM activities throughout the afternoon. Parents of PRIMARY and JUNIOR students are welcome to drop in at some point in the afternoon to see all of the engaging activities Bessborough is participating in.

Please note that students in the Primary and Junior divisions will be grouped with other students in their own grade as well as older and younger students. Parents dropping in can tour the Primary activities happening in the Grade 1-3 classrooms. Parents of Junior students can view activities in the Grade 4-6 classrooms, including portables.

We are looking forward to a day of creation, innovation and fun!

Ms. Buksner

Call Out for STEM Materials:

For our upcoming STEM day, the Junior STEM committee is looking to collect empty egg cartons (any material) and empty eggshells for some of their activities. The shells should be in two halves and rinsed out before bringing them to school. Please send in any of these items to your child's teacher as soon as possible.

Thanks!
Ms. Buksner

Wellness:

Our High-Five board (located just outside the office) is up and being filled with all sorts of acts of kindness. Way to go Bessborough! Keep up the fantastic work! Be sure to take a look at all the wonderful ways we help one another.
This week the Wellness Group watched a short video about how "Day of Pink" began and then brainstormed ways we can support people who are being bullied. Our favourite ideas are posted around the High-Five board. Some members of the Wellness Group will also be sharing some of their ideas during next week's announcements.

Grade 3-4 intramurals are starting this Wednesday! Grade 3s and 4s will both be Wednesday at lunch. Please make sure you are prepared with a lunch and proper shoes. You will be picked up from the lunchroom at 12:00. The following week the grade 3s and 4s will be split up on either Monday or Wednesday at lunch.

Because Monday is a holiday, there will be no Movement Matters.
