There is a Home & School meeting on Wednesday April 5th @7:00 pm in the library. These are opportunities for parents to have input and see what is happening at school.

We would like to officially welcome Raine Rodriguez who is filling in for Renee and Christina Neos who is with us in the mornings.  They have just recently gained access to our safe arrival email so please continue to email absences through bessborough@tdsb.on.ca.  Welcome Raine and Christina!

Have an awesome week!

Did you know...

... when Gr 3 students showed their Toy Fair recently to demonstrate different types of forces. It was incredible to see the innovation and enthusiasm students had when showing their work. Way to go Gr 3s!

... Mindfulness can help calm the mind to help manage anxiety. Ms Phillips is guiding her Kindergarten class on different breathing strategies. Starting early in age will help students develop coping strategies to manage themselves when life gets busy and overwhelming. Breathe in....breathe out! Great breathing kindies!

... Mr Baker's class read the book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. Every week, 1 student chooses a quote from the book to share with the class. The kids love the book and it's great for growth mindset! This quote was chosen from Makenzie Schouten.

Mathematics Olympics - TEAMS 2017

The 2017 Toronto Educators Association Mathematics Olympics (TEAMS) took place this Saturday, April 1, 2017. Every school’s team consisted of two intermediate students, a grade 7 and a grade 8 student, a girl and a boy respectively, as required by the TEAMS organizing committee. Emily Wilson (7C) and Lucas Flemming (8C) represented Bessborough.

They are both congratulated for their perseverance, for the impeccable manner in which they represented our school and for taking the time from their busy schedules to participate in this event on a Saturday.  Congratulations, Emily and Lucas!

In addition, Emily Wilson was awarded the grade 7 girl Anne Cirillo Award for leadership. This award is presented to students who best demonstrate exceptional achievement and excellence in collaborative problem solving and leadership throughout the Math Olympics.

Congratulations, Emily!

Moving or Changing Schools?

If your child is currently in K-7 and you are moving or changing schools for the 2017 - 2018 school year, please let the office know as soon as possible as we will soon begin planning the classes for next year.

Classes are created based on a variety of factors including number of students, gender, group dynamics and other needs to ensure a balance within the grade.

Appointments for Students:

If you are picking up your child for an appointment, please come to the office.  Students need to sign out and have permission by a parent.  Only visitors who have signed in at the office with a pass, are allowed in the school or school yard during the day.

Phone Calls for Students:

We are receiving many phone calls for students during the day.  Just a reminder to please have your child make arrangements at home for play dates after school.  If you need to contact your child during the day, please leave a message with Raine or Christina and they will pass the message to your child.

If you need to speak to your child during the day, your child will be asked to call you during recess or lunch to avoid interrupting instructional time.  If it is an emergency, let the office know and your child will be called to the office immediately.

Sub Day!

A reminder that this Monday April 3rd is the next Sub Lunch day at Bessborough!

Home & School Community Outreach Initiative Update - Vote at April 5th Meeting

Thank you for your feedback regarding a H&S community-support initiative. After much investigation, consultation, and evaluation of feedback, we are very pleased to announce that the H&S Executive will be bringing forward a motion at next week’s H&S General Meeting to fund the Empower Reading program at a school without the funding opportunity to purchase it themselves. We have seen first-hand here at Bessborough how successful this program can be for kids needing extra reading support, and believe this to be a very worthy initiative.

Arts Programming Update - Vote at April 5th Meeting

For the past two fall terms, we have welcomed Sarina Condello and Sheila Philcox to the school to deliver custom-designed, curriculum-based arts programming to students in Kindergarten through grade 6.  This program has culminated in our December holiday concert.  We are fortunate to be able to book Sarina and Sheila directly, rather than through the (much more expensive) arts program they work with.  They are willing to work with us again next fall, and we would like to formalize the booking so we don’t lose this opportunity.  We will bring forward a motion for voting to set aside funds from fall 2017 fundraising to support this program.  The amount will be finalized for the meeting.

H&S General Meeting - Wednesday April 5th

You can see the agenda and presentation for next Wednesday’s H&S General Meeting posted on the H&S website.  The meeting is at 7pm in the library.  Babysitting will be provided in the mini gym.

Please arrive 10 minutes early to register, and bring your mobile device so you are able to vote.

Countdown to Mayfair!

With Spring finally here it’s time to get involved with Bessborough’s largest FUNraiser…Mayfair.

Each year the Mayfair Committee looks to our parents to get involved in variety of ways:
·         Come out to the kickoff meeting to brainstorm new ideas and/or
·         Be a part of the planning committee and/or
·         Donate an item to the silent auction and/or
·         Volunteer your time on the day – Sunday, May 28th!
How do you want to get involved?  Please email the Mayfair Co-Chairs - Jenn O’Donnell at jodonnell@curacomm.net or Kristin Locklin at klocklin@gmail.com to tell us how you would like to contribute to our kids’ favourite event of the year!
We look forward to hearing from you.

Appreciation Corner
A HUGE shout out to our amazing caretaking staff - Rollington Williams, Bill Newell and Jackie Gianou - for getting us through the messy winter.  From clearing the yards and icing the sidewalks, to cleaning the floors of all the sludge the kids trek in, you always go the extra mile to make sure our school is clean and safe.  THANK YOU!!

Visit www.bessboroughhomeandschool.com now for details on all of this and more!
